Tuesdays With Tyndale?: Joel's Latest Insanity!

Apparently that crazy Joel Watts has started a new tradition: worshipping the New Living Translation of the Bible on Tuesday. Just shameless propaganda complete with lies and corrupt bribery.

We shall all pray for your soul.

Or perhaps you are defending the N/KJV since it was those two that the NLT is leaving in the dust.

You will have to admit one day, that like Creedal Orthodoxy, the NRSV is an imperialist attempt shrouded in ecumenicalism to enforce upon everyone a translation standard, colonizing unsuspecting denominations.

If the NRSV was imperialist, it would have followers telling the world, bragging arrogantly about its popularity. Just because a product is popular does not mean that it is good. People buy crap all the time. cough cough, twilight books and movies. cough cough and true blood cough cough.

The NLT is proving its neo-colonialism, trying to pretend to dominate a market that it will never have.

Simply because the NRSV is not successful, doesn’t mean that it is not imperialist. Considering that the National Council of Churches ordained it as an ‘ecumenical’ translation, it qualifies as as imperialist.

Wait wait wait. So, in order to be a top bible translation, monetarily, it has to be “successful.” Hummmmm quite neo-colonial and capitalist of you Joel. I see success in quite different terms. The more persons that are included in a community, the more successful it is, like women and minorities. But hey, the NLT, exclusion is its middle name.

Actually, considering that you are the capitalist here, the free market allows people to break the hold of imperialism and choose for themselves what they desire. Although the NRSV was produced for ‘ecumenicalism’ and attempts to sway denominations as whole to use it, it has failed because it no one has chosen to to use it. The NLT, which has gender-inclusive language, is one which others have freely chosen to use, regardless of the official imprimatur from a denomination or national/world body. Therefore, to use the wasted logic of imperialism, it is the radical and the rebel’s choice against the Imperialist.

Joel, you seem to have an issue with ecumenism (even tho this is not the reason I read the NRSV). The NLT is imperialist because it promotes Christian tribalism and it is just not a good translation. I would even dare call it quite unfaithful at times to the original language. It’s editors prefer their theology to the original words recorded. Plenty of examples. Galatians is only a start.
